Traveling VBS FAQ

Q: Is this the first year for this program? I don't think I have heard about it before.

A: Actually, this is the second year for this program, although we called it something different last year, and we were limited to the number of congregations that we could run it for. Last year our Day Camp program reached over 350 campers in 7 congregations along the Gulf Coast that were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The program was sponsored by Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response, and was a great success. This year we are committed to having the program available for eight weeks. Because LSSDR is not sponsoring the program this summer, we can make it available to any congregation who is interested in the program. The congregations will need to provide their own funding for the program.

Q: How long does the program run?

A: Traveling VBS is a one week session (Sunday-Friday) during the summer for up to 50 children (grades 1-6th) during June and July, 2007. Traveling VBS can be very flexible at your site. It usually runs 9:00am - 3:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9:00am - noon on Friday. However, if you need to have a morning only, or an evening only program, we are able to accommodate your requests. If you have more than 50 children that would like to attend, it is possible for one site to have more than one week of Traveling VBS. The weeks will be the same program wise, but would be available for the children that were unable to attend the other week. Ask for more information when you register.

Q: When will Camp Dixie counselors arrive at our congregation? At what time do they leave?

A: The Camp Dixie counselors will arrive at your congregation sometime on Sunday afternoon/evening of the week of your event. They will be available for Traveling VBS programming immediately after that time (if your congregation would like to have a Sunday evening opening service or open house.) Counselors will leave your congregation to return to Camp Dixie on Friday. Friday will be a short day, Traveling VBS will end with a closing program at noon.

Q: Are there any additional costs my congregation will be responsible for during Day Camp?

A:  Camp Dixie will be arriving with all the supplies that are needed to run the Day Camp program at your site. The only additional cost you may encounter will be in the housing and three meals a day for the five counselors during the week.

Q: Who provides lunch for the campers?

A: Lunch is provided by either the host congregation or by having the campers bring a "brown bag" lunch. Camp Dixie is not responsible for meals or for making meals for campers, the staff will be leading programming when they are at the host congregation.

Q: What is the theme/curriculum for Camp Dixie Traveling VBS?

A: Camp Dixie Traveling VBS's theme is the same as the resident camp theme! "Called" with the same theme verse from Ephesians 4:11-12 “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” The curriculum will be the same one that is developed for use at the Camp Dixie resident site program, but will be tweaked to identify special needs of a Church-based rather than a Camp-based program.

Monday: Called to be Loved (Luke 15:11-24)

Tuesday: Called to Praise (John 6:1-15)

Wednesday: Called to Faith (Mark 10:46-52)

Thursday: Called to Love (Matthew 5:38-48)

Friday: Called to Share (Luke 19:1-10)

Q: What training will Traveling VBS counselors have?

A: Camp Dixie Traveling VBS counselors will participate in the same training as our summer on-site counselors. All counselors will be Red Cross certified in First-Aid and CPR. Counselors will also participate in 10 days of training on leadership, programming, and troubleshooting a summer camp/Traveling VBS program.
